Howard
Shattner's Stumble Stone Project. Stumble
Stones (Stolpersteine) commemorate victims, both those who
died and survivors, of
the Holocaust. Artist Gunter Demnig's project involves replacing
ordinary pavement cobblestones with small brass-topped cobblestones
bearing a simple inscription - name, date of birth, and
place of death, if known or appropriate. Positioned outside
of the houses of Jews and others who were murdered by the
Nazi regime, this simple concept causes passers-by to stop
and look at the inscriptions of the stones beneath their
feet, stones they may have stumbled over.
